Plants annual or perennial, hispid and/or pubescent. Stems erect, decumbent or prostrate. Leaves alternate, simple. Inflorescence a terminal scorpoid bracteate cyme. Flowers often heterostylous. Calyx 5-parted to base. Corolla funnelform, usually pubescent outside; tube straight or slightly curved; throat unappendaged; limb usually shorter than tube, lobes 5, spreading. Ovary 4-lobed; style 2- or 4-branched, each branch terminating in stigma. Gynobase flat. Long-styled flowers (PIN Form) with included stamens inserted at middle of corolla tube, style slightly exserted; Short-styled flowers (THRUM Form) with stamens inserted at throat, style shorter reaching to middle of corolla tube. Nutlets 1-4, oblique-ovate, variously ornamented.

Annual herb, up to 30 cm tall. Stem prostrate, decumbent, suberect or erect, much branched from the base. Stems, branches, leaves and bracts hispid with white small hairs. Leaves alternate, simple, exstipulate, sessile, 15-35 mm x 3-4 mm, lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, margin entire, apex usually acute, tapering towards base. Inflorescence a terminal bracteate dense scorpoid cyme, simple or forked; bracts 4-8 mm long, lanceolate, foliaceous. Flowers sessile, actinomorphic, bisexual, 5-merous, hypogynous, heterostylous. Calyx 5-partite, 6-9 mm long, hispid, lobes unequal, linear-lanceolate. Corolla funnelform, 8-16 mm long, yellow; tube ca. 9 mm long, pubescent inside; lobes 5, spreading, broadly ovate, margin entire to undulate, throat without any appendages. Stamens 5, inserted at about the middle of corolla tube in long-styled flowers and near throat in short-styled flowers; anthers 1.5 mm long. Carpels 2, syncarpous; ovary superior, deeply 4-lobed; style simple, slender, bifid near apex, long styles reaching throat of corolla, slightly exserted, short styles reaching to middle of corolla tube; stigmas 2, kidney-shaped. Nutlets +/- 1.7 mm long, ovoid, light brown, minutely tuberculate to smooth.
